"Hallo, is there Darren Hayes?"
Probably there is a reason why those who love Australia calls it the other way round country.Darren Hayes's single 'CRUSH(1980ME)' in Australia came out in autumn last year, but 'I MISS YOU'- in January this year. The rest of the world,as we know, could buy single 'I MISS YOU'in autumn last year, but 'CRUSH(1980ME)'- quite recently.
Eightieth for Darren are connected with different beautiful memories and hopes of his childhood days."CRUSH is about the year 1983",he explains."That time I was naive and the word around me seemed naive too. I felt I may be mistaken, and thought the dreams should come true. This time gave me a hope. I believed I can become a singer.
"I wasn't like other children.I lived in my own world of fantasies connected with the music and superstars of that time. But it was more than just being a fan. I went to the concerts and instead of screaming I was thinking about how much I want to be there on the stage myself.
"CRUSH is my favorite song from the album. You play it...and just smile. This song reminds me the way I was in the childhood. When I grew I needed my idols. But now I'm ready to go on. I don't want to look back in the past and be like some one anymore. CRUSH was the way to say farewell to this period of my life."
That song Darren loved so much that even considered to film a video before record company approved it as a single. Hayes put his own money into project and trusted it to Grant Marshall - a guy, who's only studying direction. By the way, in video for a short moment you may see Darren's Dad as a storekeeper.
Crush is the last single from Darren's first solo album Spin. Now Darren is taking a half-year break, but in July he's planning to begin work on a new record. During his free time Darren will attend some university classes (for fun), work on his guitar, write some songs, raise his new puppy and have a lot of time for sleeping.
"I need to sleep forever," he said few months before. "The album is released a long time ago, but I still don't have a time to sleep. There are always someone calling on the phone or squeaks my organizer. And you just can't get away from it."
As he says, songs may suddenly come into his head. "I simply feel the melody and try to put into it all my emotions. I always have some new melodies in my mind. At first I sing the melody into dictaphone and then play it along with any instrument, usually a piano. Sometimes I even left a message on a phone answer, so I may not to forget it. I have two phone numbers at home, so if the melody comes to my head at 3 o'clock in the morning I call and sing it and then fall asleep again."
Although in the times of Savage Garden Darren Hayes was knocked down by the fan on the stage and he does admit that the love of his fans can sometimes go out of control, Darren speaks out about his fame quite modestly: "If honestly I don't think I'm extremely famous. I have a long way to go to that stage. I remember how I once was getting out of the plain in the airport and saw the crowd of the photographers. I put on the dark sunglasses, raised up the collar, went out and...no reaction! Photographers were standing with their hands in the pockets and didn't pay any attention. Later turned out that they were waiting for the Olympic champion. But for me it was a good lesson. God punishes the one who are selfish."
